Psych continúa con la tradición de la cadena USA de series protagonizadas en personajes extraños e inteligentes. Creada por Steve Franks, al igual que Monk, Psych mezcla la comedia y el mundo del crimen y gira en torno a un excéntrico personaje, un joven asesor de la policía que resuelve crímenes gracias a sus grandes dotes de observador, una habilidad que hace creer a los detectives que es una especie de psíquico... o al menos eso es lo que él deja que crean los demás.

Criado en Santa Barbara por una familia de policías, Shawn Spencer (James Roday, Miss Match), posee unos extraordinarios poderes de observación, logrados gracias a su padre Henry (Corbin Bernsen, La Ley de Los Angeles), un oficial de policía que animaba al joven Shawn a fijarse siempre incluso en los detalles más pequeños de todo lo que le rodea, como forma de entrenarlo para su inevitable carrera en el negocio familiar.
