Margarita Santos vive en un pueblito alejado de la Ciudad de México llamado Tonatico, Margarita es noble y buena y es querida por mucha gente en el pueblo, sin embargo la vida la golpea fuertemente a ella y a su familia, pues después de poseerlo todo y tener dinero de sobra ahora su fortuna se vio reducida a nada dejándolos en la ruina.

El padre de Margarita, Ramiro, enferma y no tienen el dinero suficiente para un tratamiento adecuado y muere lleno de odio y rencor en contra de su primo lejano Evaristo Olmos a quien culpa directamente de su ruina económica, tanto Margarita como su hermano Silverio se convencen de la culpabilidad de Evaristo al igual que Ramiro quien muere obligando a Margarita el prometerle sacar a su familia de la ruina.

En la quiebra la familia descubre que aquellas personas buenas y amables les sacan la vuelta y los desprecian solo por no tener dinero. Paulino Zavala es el verdadero culpable de la ruina de los Santos pues se encargó de desprestigiar la orfebrería que tenían a su cargo. Bernardo, el novio de Margarita, se zafa de todo compromiso con ella para casarse con Alba la hija de Paulino, Alba humilla constantemente a Margarita por su situación.

Cuando Evaristo, el primo del padre de Margarita, se entera de la situación tan crítica que vive su familia, los invita a vivir a su casa en México. Sin embargo, Margarita lo odia, pues su padre le hizo creer por muchos años que él fue el culpable de la quiebra de su negocio, cuando la verdad es otra ya que Evaristo es noble y de buenos sentimientos y siempre ha estado enamorado de María Inés, la madre de Margarita.

Margarita conoce a Jesús, quien se enamora de ella a primera vista y le ofrece su amor sincero, pero, Margarita, cegada por su implacable orgullo y su terrible desesperación por el dinero, lo rechaza para buscar un marido rico que la saque a ella y a su familia de la pobreza en que viven.
